Best time for a Lake Skadar boat tour (month by month)

12 min read 1 July 2026

There is no single 'best' month for Lake Skadar. There's a best month for birds (April), one for water lilies (June), one for swimming (July) and one for quiet and colour (October). Chasing one, you don't want to arrive in the season of another.

In this guide I go month by month — with what I recommend to friends depending on why they're coming.

March and April: birds and calm water

Lake Skadar is one of Europe's most important bird sanctuaries — 280 species, including Europe's last Dalmatian pelicans. Breeding season starts late March, best sightings are early April to mid-May.

Weather in April: 15–20 °C, plenty of sun, occasional rain. Water still too cold to swim (16 °C). But: light is soft, the mountains behind still snow-capped, hardly any tourists.

Prices sit at off-season level, boat tours are available even at short notice. For birding, photography and quiet — the best month.

May and June: the golden window

If someone asks me for just one month, I say early June. Warm enough to swim (water 22 °C) but not yet crowded. Water lilies bloom (mid-May to mid-July — the photo many people come for). Weather stable, little rain.

May is a notch cooler (air 18–24 °C, water 18–20 °C) but just as beautiful. First tours with a swim stop start working.

Prices aren't at peak-season level yet, availability is good. The clear favourite for first visits.

July and August: hot, busy, still good

Truth about high season at the lake: it's much less crowded than the coast, because fewer travellers come here in the first place. But the two-hour group tours run full.

Weather: 30–35 °C daytime, hardly any rain, water at a comfortable 25–26 °C. The lake becomes Montenegro's best swimming spot, because the coast is too hot and too full.

My tip: pick a half-day or full day instead of two hours. And put the tour on the early morning (8 am start) or late afternoon (5 pm) — midday heat on the boat is brutal, canopy or not.

September and October: my personal favourite

September is the second golden window. Water still 22–24 °C, air a pleasant 24–28 °C, prices ease off, tourist numbers likewise. The birds are on the move — big flocks over the lake are normal.

October is the month for quiet. 18–22 °C, clear air, brilliant autumn colours in the surrounding hills. Swimming not for everyone (18–20 °C) but boat tours run under peak conditions.

Both months: stable weather, little wind, excellent photography. If you're flexible, come now.

November to February: not for first visitors

Winter at Lake Skadar is honestly beautiful — fog on the water, no traffic, unbeatable prices. But: many operators pause, restaurants run reduced hours, weather is fickle, and boat tours only run on request.

If you seek quiet and have been here before, you'll like November or February. For a first trip I don't recommend it.

If you do come in winter: book ahead, confirm availability in writing, plan alternatives.
